Advanced Writing Workshop

Whether you’re an experienced writer looking for a challenge or a prospective student planning to apply to graduate writing programs, the Advanced Writing Workshop can help you hone your craft, develop your distinctive voice, and imagine new directions for your project. This intensive MFA-style workshop is designed to intermingle students working on short stories, novels, memoirs, and other creative nonfiction, with the aim of encouraging cross-fertilization among these closely related genres. Each writer’s work is read and critiqued by knowledgeable peers, with the goal of not merely improving existing drafts, but drawing fresh inspiration from each other’s craft and creativity. For some, it offers a nudge to produce new writing, while others take the opportunity to revise and polish work in progress. Instructor-led discussions will address constructive approaches to peer feedback, relevant topics in narrative technique, revision strategies, literary issues of the day, and real-world writing advice. Brief shared readings (such as essays and interviews from contemporary writers) help develop the conversation in a positive atmosphere devoted to resource sharing. The instructor will provide each writer with detailed and holistic comments/suggestions on a substantial portion of the work submitted for peer feedback. Since readings and discussion topics vary from semester to semester, the course may be repeated.

This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Storytelling. It may be taken to pursue the certificate, or as a standalone course. Questions? Contact us at The Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts: Email sps.pala.ce@nyu.edu or call 212-998-7289.
