On May 20th, the NYU School of Professional Studies (SPS) hosted a virtual convocation ceremony to celebrate the Class of 2021. The livestreamed festivities began with a bagpipe musical performance at the SPS flagship building and a welcome from SPS Dean Susan Greenbaum, who extended her congratulations to the graduating class and gave special recognition to student leaders, Dean’s Scholars, and award recipients, before introducing NYU President Andrew Hamilton.
President Hamilton commended the SPS Class of 2021 as leaders who continued to strive, grow, and achieve during an unprecedented year. He also thanked Dean Greenbaum for her years of service, as she plans to retire and will be succeeded by incoming SPS Dean Angie Kamath. The celebration proceeded with a keynote speech from Madeline McIntosh, CEO of Penguin Random House US, the nation’s largest book publisher. McIntosh praised SPS graduates for their resilience and accomplishments, shared some of her own business challenges and lessons learned this past year, and invited students to reflect on this period of crisis and the role they will play in “shaping a future that is more sustainable, more equitable, and more humane than what we had before.”
The NYU SPS Division of Programs in Business (DPB) was proud to be the academic home of this year’s Graduate Student Speaker, Roksolana Sheverack, MS in Management and Systems (MASY). In her speech, Sheverack acknowledged the difficulties of the pandemic and discussed her experience as a Ukranian immigrant overcoming language and cultural barriers to acquire her degrees. She celebrated the excellence and perseverance of her fellow classmates and also thanked faculty, advisors, mentors, staff, and loved ones for their guidance and support. Sheverack plans to pursue a doctorate, which will enable her to work in institutional research within a university setting.
