International Students

If you are an international student, you will be in good company at NYU and at the NYU School of Professional Studies. Each year, more than 8,200 international students from over 130 countries come to New York City to study at NYU.

The NYU School of Professional Studies itself enrolls nearly 1,350 international students each year. We take great pride in the global dimension this offers to our students both in and outside of the classroom, and we provide extensive resources to help those from other countries to make the most of their education and their time with us.

The NYU School of Professional Studies offers master's degrees and  undergraduate degrees. From the application process through graduation, we guide and nurture each of our international students, helping them to acclimate themselves to living in New York City, offering services to evaluate and hone their English-language skills, and providing them with a broad range of resources to make them feel at home.

Student Visas

Professional Pathways Visa Information

Only certain Professional Pathways programs qualify participants for student (F-1) visas. Individuals visiting on a tourist visa do not qualify. Students who are required to obtain a nonimmigrant visa for entry into the United States must consider alternative options. Students enrolled in certain courses are eligible to apply for the student (F-1) visa.

Credit Programs Visa Information

All non-resident students accepted into an NYU School of Professional Studies undergraduate or graduate degree program must obtain an F-1 visa. In order to be eligible, a student must have a letter of acceptance from the NYU School of Professional Studies Office of Admissions, and must complete an Application of Eligibility (AFOCE), which is sent with the acceptance package. Please see the Office of Admissions website for further details.

English Proficiency

If English is your second language or if you did not graduate from a college or university where English was the language of instruction, it will be necessary to evaluate your proficiency in English. Prior to meeting the International Student Coordinator, contact the NYU School of Professional Studies American Language Institute (ALI) for a language proficiency testing appointment by calling 212-998-7040. The evaluation will cost a fee and will take approximately two hours. The staff at ALI will provide you with a report for the Student Services Staff as soon as the test is over.

ALI fosters an atmosphere where proactive learning precedes rote memorization. ALI instructors believe that long-term retention depends as much upon what happens outside the classroom as within it. ALI's location in the heart of New York City provides incomparable access to the cultures of the world. It extends the classroom to the streets, providing you with a complete immersion in language and culture to help you learn how to express yourself with ease and accuracy.

Courses taken at ALI are designed to improve your proficiency in English; they do not count as credits toward degree requirements. If you are required to take classes at the ALI, it may take more time than you had originally expected to finish your studies, and there will be additional tuition charges. If you are attending NYU as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must obtain permission from OISS in order to register for an ALI course in your first semester while you are also registered for at least six academic credits in your program. After your first semester (if you are an F-1 or J-1 visa holder) you must register for at least 12 credits as well as whatever ALI course your academic program requires.
