File the FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to determine eligibility for most financial aid, including scholarships. We encourage all U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are eligible to file the FAFSA to do so regardless of financial circumstances.

If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., you are not eligible to file the FAFSA, but you may still qualify for alternative financing options and payment plans. Learn about financial aid for international students.

Tips for Filing Your FAFSA

  • The FAFSA website provides specific deadline dates based on your state of residence and intended semester of study. These federal deadlines are the final day of an academic year that a student could apply for federal aid and are not representative of the suggested time to file. File the FAFSA as soon as possible, well before you are admitted to the program.
  • You’ll need the NYU school code when you fill out the FAFSA. It's 002785.
