Center for Sustainable Built Environment

The Center for the Sustainable Built Environment serves as the nexus, thought partner and collaborator at the Schack Institute of Real Estate on issues related to sustainability. In areas where sustainable development, efficiency, building technology and finance can have an impact on ways we live, work, manage and envision the world around us, the center seeks to advance best practices across the many disciplines that touch commercial real estate, development and construction.

The Center pursues several paths to achieve its mission. These include convenings such as the well established Schack Conference on Sustainable Real Estate, industry partnerships, student engagement and Initiatives in sustainable real estate. Additionally, the center works with faculty at Schack and across the School of Professional Studies to embed the latest thinking and technology into courses. Across NYU and New York City more broadly, the Center serves as a place to connect a range of disciplines to real estate partners.

Students in the NYU Schack Masters in Real Estate Development (MSRED) have the option of a Sustainable Development Concentration in which the center plays a critical role. Crafting courses such as Green Building and Sustainable Development, Infrastructure and Urban Development, as well as an Applied Project in Sustainable Development, the center provides experiential learning opportunities and researcher positions.

For interested Companies, the Center coordinates a fellows program whereby students are embedded in firms to assist in tackling issues around sustainability finance, efficiency, policy and triple bottom line development and investing.

Collaborations include:
